Wrestling Sports Injuries

Ivynn, a dedicated teenage wrestler, came into our office struggling with significant physical discomfort that was beginning to affect both his athletic performance and everyday life. He was experiencing severe low back pain, hip pain, and neck pain that had gradually worsened during his wrestling season, to the point, he said, “he couldn’t sit still.” As a young athlete who trained and competed regularly, the physical demands of the sport had taken a toll on his body.

Ivynn’s pain made it challenging for him to participate fully in wrestling practices and competitions, and even routine daily activities like school, were becoming uncomfortable. His mother had also noticed something concerning—Ivynn’s posture appeared off, and there was a visible tilt around his clavicle area that suggested his body was not properly aligned.

Seeking answers and relief, Ivynn came to our office for a comprehensive chiropractic evaluation. Dr. Chris performed a full consultation and took chiropractic X-rays to better assess Ivynn’s pain. The x-rays revealed several misalignments in his neck and spine that were pinching his nerves and contributing to the pain he was experiencing in multiple areas of his body.

Based on these findings, Dr. Chris developed a personalized care plan designed specifically for Ivynn’s condition and athletic needs. His treatment plan included regular chiropractic adjustments to help restore proper alignment to his spine, along with postural rehabilitation aimed at retraining his spine and supporting muscles to return to a healthier, more natural position. This approach not only focused on relieving Ivynn’s current pain but also worked to correct the underlying structural issues contributing to his symptoms.

Over the course of six months, Ivynn committed to his care plan and made steady progress. As his spine began to regain proper alignment and his posture improved, the pain that had once limited him gradually disappeared. By the end of his treatment, Ivynn reported that he was “completely better” in all the areas that had previously been causing concern. He was back on the wrestling mat competing without pain, working out with ease again, and enjoying his daily activities without any limitations.

Ivynn’s story is a great example of how chiropractic care can help young athletes recover from sports-related stress on the body, restore proper spinal function, and get back to doing what they love.

Wrestling is a physically demanding sport that places significant stress on a teenager’s spine, hips, and supporting muscles. The constant grappling, twisting, lifting, and sudden directional movements can strain the lower back and hip joints. These repetitive forces may lead to muscle strains, ligament irritation, joint inflammation, and spinal misalignments. Because the lower back and hips are central to nearly every wrestling movement, pain in these areas can quickly affect balance, strength, and mobility. Over time, if the underlying stress on the spine and hips is not addressed, the discomfort can worsen and begin interfering with both athletic performance and everyday activities like sitting, bending, or walking. Early evaluation and proper care can help identify the cause of the pain and support a healthy recovery so young wrestlers can safely continue their sport.

What are the Symptoms of Pain from Wrestling?

Common symptoms of low back and hip pain from wrestling can include persistent soreness or stiffness in the lower back or hips, especially after practices or matches. Teen athletes may experience sharp or aching pain when bending, twisting, lifting an opponent, or performing bridging movements on the mat. Some wrestlers notice reduced flexibility, muscle tightness, or difficulty standing up straight after activity. Pain may also radiate into the buttocks or upper legs, making movements like running, squatting, or changing direction uncomfortable. In some cases, athletes may feel weakness, instability, or fatigue in the lower back and hip area, which can affect balance and performance. These symptoms can gradually worsen if the stress on the spine and hip joints continues without proper rest or treatment. Neck pain, upper back pain, mid back pain and shoulder pain can also occur from wrestling.

What Kind of Problems Arise Following Injuries from Wrestling?

Low back and hip pain can create several problems for wrestlers if it is not properly addressed. The pain can limit mobility, strength, and flexibility, making it difficult to perform essential movements such as lifting, grappling, or maintaining balance on the mat. Athletes may begin to compensate with poor posture or altered movement patterns, which can place additional stress on other areas of the body and increase the risk of further injury. Ongoing pain can also reduce endurance, slow reaction time, and negatively affect overall athletic performance. If left untreated, these issues may interfere not only with wrestling but also with everyday activities such as sitting, standing, exercising, and normal physical activity.  Injuries to the neck can also readiate into the shoulders, upper and mid back.

How Does Chiropractic Help?

Chiropractic care can help wrestlers recover from injuries and pain by improving spinal alignment, joint mobility, and overall body function. Through specific chiropractic adjustments, pressure on the spine and surrounding joints can be reduced, which helps relieve pain and restore normal movement. Chiropractic may also incorporate stretching, strengthening, and postural exercises to support the muscles around the spine and hips. This approach helps improve flexibility, balance, and stability—important factors for wrestling performance. By addressing both the symptoms and the underlying structural issues, chiropractic care can help wrestlers heal more effectively and return to the mat feeling stronger and more mobile.

Growing up in Metro Detroit Michigan in a medical family, with both his mother and father working as registered nurses, Dr. Chris always knew he wanted to go into the medical profession. After recovering from a severe auto accident while he was in high school, in which he fractured both of his arms, several fingers and his leg, and had to undergo extensive surgeries and physical therapy. That is when Dr. Chris decided to go to Wayne State University to become a physical therapist.

At the same time Dr. Chris was going to Wayne State University to become a physical therapist he was introduced to chiropractic care by a high school friend who was going to Life University to become a chiropractor.  Since starting under chiropractic care, the chronic sinus infections he used to experience on a monthly basis now happen rarely, and at that time he became a chiropractic believer and converted. That’s when he changed his college major from physical therapy to chiropractic.

Dr. Chris graduated from Life University in Marietta Georgia in 2002 and has dedicated his life to helping the people of Macomb County Michigan achieve natural and safe health and healing through chiropractic rehab and disc decompression therapy.
