Poor Posture

Austin Improved his Life Long Posture Problem with Chiropractic!

Austin, a young man, came into our office with posture concerns. He stated he had bad posture and noticed a distinct “hunch” in his back, which he felt he had most of his life. He was also having headaches, neck pain, and back pain, which was affecting his everyday life. Austin noted it was interfering with his working out as well as at his job. On his consultation sheet, he listed his pain levels in his back at 9’s on a scale from 0-10, and his neck and headaches, at 5’s.

After analyzing Austin’s x-rays, Dr. Chris noted there was too much curve in his back, and his posture was out of alignment. The misalignment’s in his spine were also putting pressure on many of his nerves, which was contributing to the high level of pain Austin was experiencing. Dr. Chris created a care plan specific to Austin’s needs, which included manual adjustments, postural traction therapy, muscle gun stimulation, and heat and ice therapy. The specified treatments were geared to not only correcting the misalignment’s in Austin’s spine, but to correct the curve in his back to achieve a closer to normal position. After just three months of posture rehab, postural adjustments and postural traction in the opposite position, new x-rays were taken. Much improvement was noted by Dr. Chris and Austin said he felt he was about 60% better, and his numbers decreased to 5’s from 9’s.  After one year, Austin’s x-rays showed considerable change in the curve in his back, and Austin stated he was “totally better” in most areas. He noticed the change in his posture and only had slight back pain which he noted as 2’s, on the scale from 0-10. His headaches were completely gone, and he was not experiencing any neck pain anymore.

Austin was able to achieve his goal of improving his posture at our office, and said he doesn’t notice the once obvious hunch in his back. His life has improved by being able to work out again without pain, and get through the work day pain free.

Poor Posture usually stems from the spine being aligned in an unnatural position. It can be seen by having rounded shoulders, a forward head, or a slumped or hunchback. Poor posture can not only lead to pain and discomfort, but potential health issues. Poor posture can actually begin in childhood from spinal deformities such as scoliosis, or just from excessive slouching. Long hours in school or in front of a screen, carrying a backpack, or lack of physical activity contribute to poor childhood posture. Adults can acquire poor posture from extended periods of sitting at a computer at work, carrying heavy objects regularly, or weak core muscles. Poor posture at any age can lead to permanent structural changes and have long-term consequences.

What are the Symptoms of Poor Posture?

Symptoms of poor posture can manifest in many ways. These can include pain, stiffness, soreness, and additional physical issues. Common symptoms include pain in the neck, back, and shoulders, low back pain, headaches, muscle strain or stiffness, spasms, body aches, nerve compression, and decreased range of motion.

What Kind of Problems Arise from Poor Posture?

Many problems can arise if poor posture is not corrected. Besides pain, other issues can include: breathing difficulties, digestive issues, jaw pain, poor balance, decreased mood and mental health issues, reduced flexibility, fatigue, increased risk of falls, poor circulation, foot and knee problems, sleep disorder, and joint and muscle dysfunction.

How Does Chiropractic Help?

Chiropractic is one of the most effective ways to improve posture. Chiropractors can identify misalignment’s, assess your current posture, and use techniques including spinal adjustments to correct and restore proper alignment and posture. Chiropractic helps to balance muscle support and relieves pinched nerves, all which help facilitate proper posture and overall body healing.

Growing up in Metro Detroit Michigan in a medical family, with both his mother and father working as registered nurses, Dr. Chris always knew he wanted to go into the medical profession. After recovering from a severe auto accident while he was in high school, in which he fractured both of his arms, several fingers and his leg, and had to undergo extensive surgeries and physical therapy. That is when Dr. Chris decided to go to Wayne State University to become a physical therapist.

At the same time Dr. Chris was going to Wayne State University to become a physical therapist he was introduced to chiropractic care by a high school friend who was going to Life University to become a chiropractor.  Since starting under chiropractic care, the chronic sinus infections he used to experience on a monthly basis now happen rarely, and at that time he became a chiropractic believer and converted. That’s when he changed his college major from physical therapy to chiropractic.

Dr. Chris graduated from Life University in Marietta Georgia in 2002 and has dedicated his life to helping the people of Macomb County Michigan achieve natural and safe health and healing through chiropractic rehab and disc decompression therapy.
